London Mayor Boris Johnson dropped by at Ilminster’s conference centre and café, Monks Yard, on Wednesday and made an impromptu speech to a rapt cafe audience.

The sometimes-controversial figure posed for photos and chatted to customers. He also met with Marcus Fysh and Rebecca Pow, prospective Conservative candidates for Yeovil and Taunton Deane.

 “Nothing could be better for the South West economy than the duelling of the A303 and A358,” said Mr Johnson.

Senior Manager at Monks Yard, Dean Holling said Mr Johnson had chosen Monks Yard because it is conveniently located for travellers using the M5 and A303.

“Politicians don’t always have great Press, but Boris was someone people are always keen to meet. He gave a great presentation and spoke passionately about the need to upgrade both the A303 and A358.

“And true to form he threw in some amusing jokes, mainly at the expense of his party’s political rivals!

“He’s a very charismatic character and will always be welcome back to the Monks Yard, as he mentioned that he travels past regularly - as, of course, will all politicians who make visits to the South West.”
